Roofing Systems The right materials are not the only important factor when building a reliable roof. Proper installation and maintenance of your roofing system will help you save money and prolong the life of your roof. You should also be knowledgeable about the roofing system you choose, particularly concerning the warranty. Some manufacturer warranties have specific requirements that can become void if a roof is not installed properly or not installed with the right materials. The Design-It® Center Roofing Estimator at your local Menards® makes it easy to estimate the amount and cost of roofing materials based on the design and dimensions of your roof. You can also get an estimate on select soffit, fascia, and gutter materials. Another great tool you can use in-store or online is the Design-It® Center Roofing & Siding Visualizer. You can upload a photo of your home or use sample images to see how different roofing and siding materials will look. Once you've found the perfect look, you can save your project and view it later at your local Menards® to buy the materials you need.

Synthetic Roofing Synthetic roofing products are manufactured to have the same appearance of traditional roofing materials but are made of plastic or rubber. Synthetic roofing products are fairly new and have been available since 1993. Menards® offers Novik synthetic roofing products, which are available in a variety of different styles and colors. Novik offers roofing panels that mimic the classic look of cedar shingles, clay tiles, or slate but are constructed with a specialized polymer that is designed to withstand hail, wind, and harsh temperatures. The panels are lightweight and require little maintenance. You can also walk on roofs that have a Novik roofing system, provided you follow necessary safety procedures. Novik products must be installed on a roof that has a minimum pitch of 3/12. All of the Novik panels have a 50-year limited warranty. Novik roof panels cannot be directly installed on top of asphalt shingles, so the old shingles must be removed prior to installation.

Modified Bitumen Roofing Modified bitumen roofing is a roofing membrane that is recommended for low-slope roofs and is found on many commercial buildings. This type of roofing is composed of multiple layers and is highly resistant to cracks and tears. Depending on the product, modified bitumen roofing can be installed with cold adhesives, asphalts, or the common torch method. Menards® offers atactic polypropylene (APP) modified bitumen roofing in a granulated or smooth texture. Both of the APP membranes are specifically designed for torch application, which should only be installed by a professional. Since the torch method of installing this type of roofing poses a fire hazard, it is not recommended for occupied buildings. It is also not recommended to torch-apply a modified bitumen membrane sheet directly to a wood deck.

Roll Roofing Roll roofing is a continuous roll of material with asphalt and mineral granules covering the entire surface. Roll roofing is easy to install and ideal for low-slope roofing where shingles are not recommended. This roof type requires a minimum pitch between 2/12 and 3/12. This type of roofing can also be used on roofs where the appearance is not as critical. When installing roll roofing, it is recommended that it be installed with shingle or felt underlayment. Menards® offers several options for roll roofing, including Topseal, which is self-adhered, as well as the traditional version.

EPDM Rubber Roofing Ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) rubber roofing is ideal for flat or gently sloping residential roof surfaces such as carports, sunrooms, and more. EPDM rubber roofing is designed to be lightweight, flexible, and durable for ease of handling and installation. The material comes in rolls that are small enough to be carried up to the roof surface by the installer. When properly installed, a rubber roof can provide excellent waterproof protection. EPDM also provides great resistance to weathering and will remain flexible in sub-zero temperatures as low as -50° Fahrenheit. Proper maintenance of a rubber roof includes inspecting it at least twice per year to keep the surface, gutters, and drains free of debris. If there is a hole or a tear in the roof, it can easily be repaired by patching with EPDM membrane. Menards® carries RoofKit rubber roofing, which comes in a variety of different sizes, as well as accessories to aid in installation. RoofKit rubber roofing carries a 10-year warranty when properly installed with other RoofKit products. The warranty coverage also requires that RoofKit rubber roofs have a positive drainage of at least 1/8″ by 12″. It is important to only use accessories that are compatible with EPDM rubber roofing. Asphalt coatings and cements should never be used to patch or adhere a rubber roof as the solvents will cause the membrane to deteriorate.

Corrugated Asphalt Roofing Menards® carries Ondura corrugated asphalt roofing, which consists of corrugated sheets made from processed mineral and organic fibers and impregnated with bitumen or asphalt. Ondura is easy to install and can be used for the construction of new roofing. Ondura can also be installed over existing roofing, saving you time and money by not having to take out and throw away old shingles. This material is recommended for roofs that have a slope of 3/12 or more. Ondura roofing systems must be properly installed with Ondura nails, or the limited lifetime warranty will be void. Ondura is also fairly easy to maintain as it can be painted, if needed, with high-grade outdoor acrylic latex paint. Mold and mildew can easily be eliminated from Ondura panels by periodically cleaning them with a mixture of one part bleach and 10 parts water. Ondura is covered by a limited lifetime warranty; the material is warranted to be free from material defects for the lifetime of the building it is installed on.

Snow Guards prevent the dangerous movement of frozen precipitation on a sloped roof by suspending it in a holding field so it can melt completely or drop off in small amounts. Compare Models to find which snow guard is right for you. Adding beauty and function, our clear snow guards help prevent damage from sudden avalanches while remaining practically invisible. Several important features to consider when selecting snow guards for metal roofing applications are the height, width and shape of the particular system. This determines the snow guards’ ability to hold back layers of frozen precipitation to help eliminate unexpected slides. Our 30 plus years of experience manufacturing snow guards has taught us that a pad style guard should have a flat, forward mounted face that measures at least 3 inches across and stands no less than 2.5 inches high. They should always be attached on the lowest portion of the roofing panel where the frozen precipitation actually moves, not on a high seam above the problem area. Our metal roof snow guard products are a cost-effective, long lasting, aesthetically pleasing snow retention solution for any metal corrugated, standing seam, asphalt, shingle or slate roof located in a winter climate. Other products offered include leaf gutter guards, roof clamps for attaching accessories to a metal roof, vent pipe and chimney protection devices, snow guard adhesive, sealant and screws. VentSaver vent pipe protectors are designed for chimney and vent pipe protection against sliding ice and snow on glossy coated roofs. RoofClamp is an attachment solution for how to attach accessories to a metal roof panel. LeafBlox are fast and easy to install gutter guards. The patented SnowBreaker snow guards are one of the most distinctive new snow guard products available. At first the SnowBreaker anchors the frozen mass on the roof until melting occurs. As the metal panel warms and the snow and ice begins to turn to slush, the frozen precipitation will gradually loose its grip on the guard and begin a very slow down-hill slide. When the snow and ice starts to move on the roof, this cost effective product minimizes the danger by slicing it into small pieces so it can safely come off the roof. The forward cutting edge and the tucked back rear support form a triangular, pointed shape that acts like a fin to split up frozen precipitation. This design idea is quite contrary to the conventional snow retention systems of today which are designed to hold snow and ice on the roof by using bars or staggered holding fields. The radical new product design allows the melting snow and ice to slowly shed itself from the panel while the guard slices it into safer, smaller pieces before reaching the roof’s edge. This can be especially beneficial in areas where unusual winter weather conditions can sometimes exceed the roof snow load design. In addition it can be a cost cutting solution to install snow guards in just isolated roof areas to break up the snow and ice rather than the older conventional way of retaining it on the roof until it melts. The SnowBreaker can be mechanically fastened or adhesive mounted. Because of the cutting edge design, it is not conducive to receiving significant sheer loads so we now include a peel and stick version for winter time application. Aesthetically, the SnowBreaker is extremely pleasing to the eye, easy to install and is very cost effective way to prevent damage caused by the sudden release of snow and ice. The RoofClamp is designed to address the challenges of attaching accessories such as service walks, satellite dishes, HVAC equipment, pipes/conduit, signage and photovoltaic solar modules to a metal roof panel. The RoofClamp (“RC”) works on most snap lock and seamed together roofs while the RoofClamp T (“RCT”) works on bulb shaped and T-Shaped panels. The clamps are made up of durable 6061-T6 aluminum and they incorporate three cup point set screws that clamp onto the standing seam metal roof. Instead of using one or two polished round point screws that could slip off the panel, the aluminum RoofClamp utilizes 3 rounded 1 ¼ X 3/8″ stainless steel cupped set screws that do not pierce the panel and will not void the panel manufacturer’s warranty. This rounded cupped screw is the same field proven screw that has been used on the SnoBar system for more than 20 years without ever having a callback. There is a beefy 3/8″ screw for attaching roofing accessories in on the top of the clamp. For optimum strength and ease of installation, the clamp is one piece instead of two. It is fast and easy to install, accommodates more panels and will last the life of the roof.
