Metal Roof Vs Shingles Cost Comparison

Comparing the two, we see that a metal roof is probably the best roofing material. For one thing, asphalt shingles are not recyclable. According to the National Association of Homebuilders Research Center, 20 billion pounds of asphalt shingles are dumped into U.S. landfills every year. To put that in perspective, if you filled a 40,000 pound truck with the shingles dumped into landfills, each truck placed end to end would reach from New York to California and back, and then as far as Chicago. 56 percent of metal roofing can be recycled. Because the metal roof lasts for so long, there is not a need to tear them off and cause more pollution to the planet. Warranties on metal roof surpass the longevity of an asphalt roof. Dollar for dollar, then, means a metal roof is the best choice of the two. You must consider cost into the equation, and here is where the asphalt shingle roof outshines the metal one. In terms of longevity, better protection against leaks, and maintenance, a metal roof is still the best bet. Many people will shy away from installing a metal roof due to cost, but if you want something that never needs replacement, and adds value and protection to your home, then a metal roof is the way to go.

Roof Estimates & CostEstimating the size of a roof is crucial in the next step of the roofing process: materials. If you get the measurements wrong, materials could cost you up to two to three times more because you buy too much or too little. Precision is crucial in this process to ensure you estimate the right amount on materials and accessories in the installation process. Be sure you double-check with the roofing professional on the measurements before moving forward in the roof installation process. Return to TopMetal Roofs vs. Asphalt ShinglesWhen you’re choosing what kind of material to install on your roof, two popular options recommended by roofing professionals are metal and asphalt shingles. These are very common in the United States, especially asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles are seen on at least 70% of homes in the United States because they’re affordable, easy to install and don’t cost as much to repair as other materials. However, metal roofing is growing more popular because of its energy efficiency and cooling ability.

When it comes to longevity, a metal roof can’t be beat. Most metal roofs are guaranteed by the manufacturer for 30 to 50 years. They will easily last the lifetime of the home. They add value to a home, making a metal roof a good investment in terms of saleability. There are homes on record that had metal shingles installed in the early 1900’s, and are still in good condition today. Asphalt shingles, on the other hand, last on the average 17 years. Compared to a metal roof, they are much easier and cheaper to install. Technology in the industry has come a long way to improving the longevity of asphalt shingles, with the fiberglass shingle considered to be the best.

Re-Roofing vs. Roof ReplacementIf you’re replacing the roof on your home with a new roof, your estimate might need to factor in the price of removing your old shingles. In some cases, you can save money by installing the new shingle over the old ones, but that’s not always an option. A new roof installed over the old one can become too heavy for the structure of the house. Plus if there are already multiple layers of shingles on the roof, not only is it a bad idea to install more shingles on top, but you may pay double the standard cost of removal.

Hey Johnny, Could not agree with you more on going with metal vs. shingles in any part of the country where asphalt shingles get blow away regularly due to storm winds, hurricanes, etc. Standing seam is a beautiful looking system, indeed, although as you pointed out, metal shingles are equally as good, yet they do cost less to install. Many homeowners also prefer the look of shingles vs. vertical panels… Standing seam is better system to have if you plan to have a solar power system installed on your roof at some point.

I live in a part of Texas where most asphalt shingle roofs get blown away within a few years. Even high-end, 30 year shingles regularly get lifted up and chipped away by the wind, with pieces of shingles laying on the ground after the storm. I would never even consider going with shingles on my house or barn, because it’s basically a waste of money in my humble opinion. If I were to buy a new house, I would be setting aside a budget to replace the existing roof with metal, and I would consider that as part of the property purchasing price. I think standing seam is by far one of the best looking and longest lasting systems for homes. I have never encountered metal shingles, but this site says that they are equally as good in terms of longevity and energy savings, while also costing less money to install than standing seam. I do like the look of standing seam better, though.

One of the main reasons for the high cost of residential metal roofing is the high cost of labor required for professional installation. That’s right, installing a metal roof is a technically involved process requiring special skills, training, experience and equipment. Unlike conventional asphalt shingle roofing, the installation of a metal roof must be carried out in a very accurately-measured and precise manner. A metal roof is not simply nailed to the roof deck like its “ugly” cousin, asphalt shingles.

Asphalt shingles come in two forms: shingling that is mixed with fiberglass and shingling that is organic, a paper shingle with an asphalt coating. The asphalt shingles that are mixed with fiberglass are more popular than the organic ones because of they are less expensive, are more resistant to fire, and are more flexible. Organic asphalt shingles are more durable because they use more asphalt in their composition than the asphalt shingles that are mixed with fiberglass, but this has the downside of being less environmentally friendly, and the paper of organic asphalt shingles makes them more hazardous in a fire.
